It’s no secret that summer is tough on Union Mission and those we serve. Donations take a dramatic decrease as compared to the rest of the year and we find ourselves struggling to meet the financial demands of running a ministry with programs that are open 24/7.

As temperatures rise our clients struggle with the perilous heat, and dehydration takes a toll on the homeless as they face a greater risk of heat stroke. Many come to our downtown shelter to find relief through a meal, a shower, clean clothes and a bed.

Summer break is supposed to be a fun time for kids. I know I always looked forward to finishing up the school year and enjoying the summer playing with my friends. Sadly, summer break can be very stressful for the kids who were dependent on school breakfast and lunch for their meals. Summer is no fun when you are hungry. Our Family Services and Outreach programs provide food to families in need across the Kanawha Valley and surrounding area.

I realize that homelessness, hunger, and addiction aren’t the first things we want to think of when we plan our summer, but I ask you…please don’t forget us!

Here is my request to you. Please consider partnering with Union Mission through our Fish and Loaves program and commit to giving $20, $50, $100 or more per month.

Just like the story in the Bible where Jesus takes five loaves and two fish and feeds 5,000 men plus women and children, Union Mission faces a similar task as we take a small amount of resources to help thousands in need. The personal sacrifice of a boy to give up his lunch, which was used of God to feed so many people, is illustrative of every gift that you give to help us.

Your gift along with others provides vital services to hurting, needy and destitute folk who pass through our doors in their hour of personal crisis.

Amazing isn’t it? People can be helped. Faith can be rekindled, and lives forever changed.
