What do addiction recovery and the manufacture of plastic-lined, industrial-grade pipe have in common? Both are services in Charleston that are helping men rebuild their lives and overcome destructive behaviors.

Baum American Corp is a local industrial manufacturing company in Charleston that produces specialty industrial pipe for the chemical and pharmaceutical
industry. Their components are shipped all over the world. In order to ship them safely and effectively, they needed custom-made packaging to protect the critical parts. That is where Union Mission comes in. “We used to make these shipping components ourselves here at the plant, but realized it was taking up
man power and space that was needed elsewhere,” said Tim McWain, Plant Manger of Baum America. “As we were looking for local outsourcing opportunities, Union Mission came up. We love the idea that we can get the components we need while helping a great organization at the same time.”

The men in Union Mission’s Addiction Recovery Program have the opportunity to work at the Mission’s wood shop building the shipping components
for Baum.

“It is a great opportunity for the men to work in the shop,” said Jason Quintrell, President and CEO of Union Mission. “It allows them to focus on a specific
project and helps take their minds off certain struggles. Idle time is no friend of someone in recovery. Plus, they also get to learn a trade skill. Revenue made from building the components goes right back into the Union Mission general fund to help support the addiction recovery expenses.”

Businesses like Baum America are a critical to the success of Union Mission’s goal of helping the hurting people of West Virginia.
