I was homeless and lived out on the streets of Charleston for 5 months sleeping wherever I could. Sadly, I had to look inside of dumpsters for food and things like that. I heard about a place called Union Mission’s Crossroads Shelter and went there to get something to eat, shower and take care of myself. I am currently
staying at the shelter, working and trying to put my life back together.

During my stay at the shelter I’ve met the chaplains, the director and different ministers who share the Word of God with us. As the ministers shared stories about Job, Daniel and Jeremiah, I realized that I’d already read these stories before in the Bible. One story reminded me of myself. It’s the story about the prodigal son who left home and returned.

I was separated from my sisters when I was 8 or 9 years old. Some of my siblings went to foster homes and I was raised by my grandmother. Over the years I’d always hoped and prayed that I would one day be reunited with my sisters whom I was separated from.

A few weeks ago, with the help of a Union Mission staff person, one of my sisters was located. Ironically, we were working just down the road from one another. We finally met and I’m thrilled that after thirty plus years, I have finally been reunited with my family!

I have two sisters living here in Charleston. My baby sister Wanda and I talk every day. I’ve also spoken to my aunt who keeps old pictures of family whom I  haven’t seen for many years. It’s a great feeling to share those old memories. Sadly, one of my sisters, my mother, grandmother and aunts have passed away. I know I will meet them in heaven someday soon.

Most of my family are living here in Charleston and I found out that I have family I didn’t know existed. I have nieces, nephews and cousins. I even met a relative when I went to the store the other day.She recognized me from my sister’s email. It’s just amazing!

I can’t put into words how much my life has changed in such a short time. I now understand why I was led to Union Mission and I can’t thank everyone enough for helping me rebuild my life and find my family again!
