Many of you are aware that Union Mission has hosted a Kanawha County Preschool on our campus on South Park Road for X years now. What you may not know, however, is that our preschool has quietly gained traction and recognition in the community as a leader and innovator in preschool education. Recently, the preschool was asked to host a Professional Learning Day session on Classroom Management due to its very high score in this assessment area.

During the training session, UM Preschool staff worked with education managers to share specific strategies and ideas for classroom management. It allowed everyone an opportunity to collaborate with one another to share effective techniques. Classroom management consists of classroom arrangements, positive behavior strategies, student engagement, and many other areas of focus.

“It was an honor to represent Union Mission in this way,” says Adrien Gibbs, Director of Union Mission Preschool. “We look forward to the next PLD in December. Our building and program is something we take great pride in and work continually with volunteers to ensure we are giving children and their families the best first school experience possible.

In Pre-K, the classroom is considered the 3rd teacher. We change our learning theme and materials out once monthly. We follow 5 curriculums. This month our theme is about tubes and tunnels. Our dramatic play area has been changed into an Italian restaurant, equipped with a variety of learning materials to encourage social skills, math and literacy.”

Adrien and Kayla do an incredible job of teaching and caring for the young minds that attend our preschool. We are excited to see the community and their peers recognize them for their incredible effort.
