During World War II, Americans were encouraged to save metal for recycling, conserve on using gas, and many other sacrificial efforts to help support the war effort. One of the most popular was the victory garden. Growing your own food put less strain on the national food supply and allowed more food items to be used for feeding the soldiers. While our country is not embroiled in a World War currently, West Virginia is experiencing a battle involving people in need. The sagging economy has put increased strain on food demands at Union Mission. Consider planting a Victory Garden for Union Mission. If you already garden, consider adding an extra grow of crops to give to Union Mission. Fresh garden vegetables are a welcome site any time at Union Mission. There are items that are needed daily and your garden donations could help tremendously. Union Mission will accept any fresh fruits and vegetables but below is a list of items that are always in need:
- Cabbage
- Lettuce
- Tomatoes
- Corn
- Potatoes
Also, if you have chickens, consider donating fresh eggs. Some supporters of Union Mission that have farms donate a hog or a cow in order to provide Union Mission with a great source of meat.
