Our first season for our Union Mission Sustainable Agriculture Program is winding down. The garden will soon be mulched and prepared for winter. Many great steps were taken this year to provide more of our own food for the men and women in our addiction recovery programs as well as those who come through our other ministries. Here is a recap of production for 2018:
- Two separate batches of broiler chickens (over 500 birds) were raised, processed, and packaged on site at Union Mission
- Hundreds of pounds of fresh vegetables were grown and harvested in our small garden space at Brookside
- Six hogs were raised and are finishing on our property and will be taken to a commercial processor later in the fall
- Several head of cattle were raised at another farm that actively supports Union Mission. These cattle will be processed as they come of age
- Additional pasture was cleared on some of Union Mission’s raw land to accommodate more hogs for next year.
Plans for next season are already in the works. We want to produce even more food for our needs as well as build infrastructure to handle our growth plans. We need your help! Please consider volunteering or giving specifically to our agriculture efforts.
